Drawers

Before my first show, in the spring of 2000, I was trying to come up with a small mechanical piece that might hang on the wall, be less involved time-wise, and be more affordable for the regular Joe. One night, as I was asleep, I had a vision of a drawer unit with a carved head on top and a carved face on each of its 3 drawer fronts. When I woke up, I sketched out the idea and thought I could use the action of the drawers opening and closing to move the eyes, mouth, eyebrows, etc. of the head on top. To date, I've created nineteen of these.

Queen of Diamonds "Queen of Diamonds"
2003
10 x 32 x 5 1/2

This is the second queen I've made, but this time I made 5 aces pop out of her crown when you pull the top drawer.

Lily "Lily"
2003
9 x 26 x 5 1/2

After seeing "Red", my wife said I should make a cowgirl drawer, and I remembered I had this Champ Butler record I found at a thrift store with a young girl on the cover in a great cowgirl outfit. I took my inspiration for "Lily" from it and gave her a ukulele to play. She crosses her eyes and her pigtails flip up when you pull open the drawers.

Red "Red"
2003
13 1/2 x 32 x 5 1/2

I've always wanted to do a guy on a drawer with a guitar. Since a guitar is rather long, I had the idea to run the neck off the side and make it and the guy's arm three-dimensional. Once I painted his hair, I decide to call him Red.

Phil and Nancy "Phil & Nancy"
2003
11 x 28 x 5

A man in the Boston area commissioned this piece for his wife's birthday. Not a bad likeness if I do say so myself.

"Use Your Head"
2003
11 x 36 x 5

This unique piece has gears that rotate when you open the drawers. The gears are attached to the mouth, eye, and a little light bulb that pops out of the top of his head. This piece is inspired and named after a phase I heard repetitively growing up.

"A Hand To Hold"
2001
8 1/2 x 26 x 4 1/4

This was the first "couple" drawer piece I completed. All the other drawers had a single figure, so I wanted to do one with a couple holding hands. When you pull the middle drawer they look at each other. Isn't that sweet?

Polka King "Polka King"
2000
8 1/2 x 29 x 4 3/4

We all know Frankie Yankovic is the polka king. Nuff said. This piece is taken directly from a $3.99 cassette I bought at a truck stop somewhere. I was really excited to carve the accordion with all it's intricacies, and I think it came out great. I added carved hands instead of trying to carve them in flat. I also carved the type out the fronts, which took forever (next time I'll cut 'em out and glue 'em on.)

Bubbles "Bubbles"
2000
10 x 31 1/2 x 4 3/4

I wanted to do a lady with a beehive hairdo, and have a bee fly out of the top of her 'do. The girls on front all have names, but I can't remember them right now. I made 2 versions of this one.

Queen of Hearts "Queen of Hearts"
2000
10 x 26 1/2 x 4 3/4

This piece has a ton of carving on the drawer fronts and the face is carved in a 3/4 profile to look like a playing card. One of my favorites.

Einstein "Einstein"
2000
8 1/2 x 28 x 4 3/4

A pretty good likeness I think. Al's hair was a bit challenging. His famous formula is carved into the front.

Land of Lincoln "Land of Lincoln"
2000
8 1/2 x 32 x 4 3/4

I thought to carve the state of Illinois on the front and have a flag pop out of the top of Abe's hat would be nifty, and who doesn't like Honest Abe.

Cap'n George "Cap'n George"
2000
8 1/2 x 27 1/2 x 4 1/4

Having recently purchased a mini lathe, I had an idea to use it to turn the fronts of one of the drawer units. The turning reminded me of waves and this piece was born. On this piece, instead of the eyebrows moving, the mustache goes up and down. Ahhrrrr!

Johnnyt Snake Eyes "Johnny Snake Eyes"
2000
8 1/2 x 28 x 4 1/4

On my 3rd drawer, I wanted to make a guy with a lot of style, a real high roller. I worked out how to carve his hair by sculpting it out of clay first. Johnny's (snake) eyes bug-out when you pull out the middle drawer.

Paula 2 "Paula 2"
2000
10 x 30 x 4 3/4

I call Paula "The Patron Saint of Stray Animals"; they just seem to track her down when they are lost, hurt, or both. On this piece is a dog she recently rescued, a cat who represents the many she has either taken in or found homes for, and an injured baby pigeon that she saved.

Paula "Paula"
2000
8 1/2 x 27 x 4 1/4

Paula is my wife and best friend. The real Paula; not this chunk of wood. This drawer depicts her with our two cats, and one who recently passed on to that great scratching post in the sky, (bottom drawer, with halo), carved on the fronts.

Mack "Mack"
2000
10 x 32 1/2 x 4 3/4

Pretty much a copy of Mo except his eyes cross and a small bird flies out of his hat when you open the middle drawer. Crazy!

Mo "Mo"
2000
8 1/2 x 27 x 4 1/4

This is dead-on my original concept for the drawers. I carved oversized noses for the drawerpulls. Most of my drawers work like this: when you pull out the bottom drawer, the mouth opens; when you pull out the middle drawer, the eyes move, (either up, down, or side to side); and the top drawer moves the eyebrows up into sort of a surprised expression.
